TikTok is preparing for widespread layoffs across its operations and marketing sectors on a global scale.
According to sources briefed on the matter, TikTok is poised to initiate significant layoffs within its operations and marketing departments on a global scale, as reported by CNN.
The anticipated layoffs are projected to impact teams responsible for user support, communications, content creation, and marketing. As part of this restructuring, TikTok’s existing global user operations team will be disbanded, with remaining employees reassigned to roles within the company’s trust and safety, marketing, content, and product divisions.
Initial reports of the impending layoffs surfaced via The Information. TikTok has yet to provide a response to inquiries regarding these developments.
Affected TikTok employees were reportedly informed of the layoff plans following The Information’s report. Adam Presser, the company’s Head of Operations, along with Zenia Mucha, Chief Brand and Communications Officer, communicated the news to the affected teams.
Although discussions regarding the layoffs had been ongoing for nearly a year, recent turnover within TikTok’s marketing, trust and safety, and operations departments led to delays, according to one source.
It’s worth noting that these layoffs are distinct from the legal and political challenges TikTok faces in the United States, which could potentially result in a nationwide ban of the app.
The exact number of employees affected by the layoffs remains uncertain. The Information suggests that a “large percentage” of the approximately 1,000 employees working within the affected teams could be impacted. In 2023, TikTok disclosed that it employed 7,000 individuals in the United States alone.
