Christine Baranski Calls West End Debut a “Dream Come True”
Christine Baranski has described her upcoming West End debut as a “dream come true” as she prepares to star in a new production of Hay Fever later this year.
The 73-year-old actor, widely recognised for roles in Mamma Mia! and The Good Wife, will take to the London stage alongside Richard E Grant. The production is set to run for 12 weeks at Wyndham’s Theatre starting from 22 September.
Speaking about the opportunity, Baranski said it feels “extraordinary” to be making her West End debut at this stage of her career. She shared that performing in London theatre has long been on her bucket list and expressed excitement about preparing for the role, including working on her English accent and learning her lines.
Despite her success in film and television, Baranski revealed she has always felt a strong connection to theatre, where she began her career. However, a busy filming schedule over the years made it difficult to return to the stage. She noted that this production feels like the perfect opportunity to reconnect with her roots, particularly given her love for light comedy and ensemble performances.
Her co-star Grant, returning to the West End after more than two decades, said he is “thrilled” to be back on stage and praised Baranski as a “sensational” performer. The play itself, first staged over a century ago, remains one of Noel Coward’s most celebrated comedies.
Hay Fever follows the eccentric Bliss family, whose chaotic weekend unfolds after each member secretly invites a guest to stay, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings. Interestingly, the character of Judith Bliss was inspired by American actress Laurette Taylor, known for her unconventional personality.
Baranski, who has previously performed in several Coward plays, said she deeply enjoys his distinctive style of dialogue and wit. She added that classical theatre continues to resonate with audiences because of its rich language and expressive storytelling.
With direction by Emily Burns and production by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions, the upcoming show is expected to bring fresh energy to a timeless comedy, while marking a significant milestone in Baranski’s illustrious career.
