Varane’s departure from Manchester United is confirmed for the end of the season

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is set to depart the club as his contract expires at the end of the season. The 31-year-old, who joined from Real Madrid in July 2021 for an initial fee of about £34m, has made 93 appearances for the Red Devils. Varane played a crucial role in United’s Carabao Cup victory in 2023 under manager Erik ten Hag.

“Everybody at United thanks Rapha for his service and wishes him well for the future,” stated a United spokesperson. Varane, who won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies with Real Madrid, retired from international football in February 2023 after winning the World Cup with France in 2018.

Injured since a match against Chelsea on 4 April, Varane’s availability for United’s final three games of the season remains uncertain. United will face Newcastle United and Brighton in their last league matches before the FA Cup final against Manchester City on 25 May at Wembley.

Reflecting on his time at United, Varane expressed optimism for the club’s future despite a challenging season. “The new owners are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy,” he said, adding that his farewell at Old Trafford during the final home game of the season will be an emotional moment.
