The US Open will extend to a 15-day tournament starting in 2025

The US Open will expand to a 15-day tournament starting in 2025, marking the first time in the Open era that the event will begin on a weekend. The 2025 main draw at Flushing Meadows will kick off on Sunday, August 24, and conclude on Sunday, September 7.

This change makes the US Open the latest Grand Slam to adopt a Sunday start. The Australian Open transitioned to a 15-day format in 2024, following the French Open’s move in 2006. Wimbledon remains the only major to stick with its traditional Monday start.

The US Open’s expansion is designed to increase fan access, following three consecutive years of record attendance. The tournament estimates the schedule change will accommodate an additional 70,000 spectators. Men’s and women’s singles first-round matches will be spread over the first three days, from Sunday through Tuesday.

The Australian Open adopted the 15-day format in part to reduce late-night finishes at Melbourne Park, a move the US Open is following to further enhance the fan experience.
