Euro 2024 Play-Off Finals: Ukraine vs. Iceland, Georgia vs. Greece, Poland vs. Wales
The Euro 2024 play-off finals promise intense showdowns as Ukraine takes on Iceland, Georgia hosts Greece, and Poland visits Wales.
Iceland’s Albert Gudmundsson secured a hat-trick in Budapest, rallying his team to a 4-1 victory over Israel. Meanwhile, Ukraine stunned Bosnia with two late goals, clinching a 2-1 win in Zenica.
Georgia, aiming for their first-ever tournament qualification, triumphed 2-0 over Luxembourg, while Greece dominated Kazakhstan with a resounding 5-0 win in Athens. In Cardiff, Wales defeated Finland 4-1, while Poland triumphed over Estonia with a commanding 5-1 victory.
These play-offs feature group winners from the top three divisions of the last UEFA Nations League or the highest-ranked teams not directly qualified for Euro 2024.
Due to the conflict in Gaza, Israel’s home game against Iceland took place in Budapest. Despite Eran Zahavi’s early penalty for Israel, Gudmundsson’s stellar free-kick and Arnor Traustason’s goal led Iceland to a halftime lead. Gudmundsson then completed his hat-trick with two late goals.
Bosnia appeared poised to reach the final after Mykola Matviyenko’s own goal, but Ukraine staged a late comeback with Roman Yaremchuk’s equaliser and Artem Dovbyk’s dramatic winner.
The play-off final, scheduled in Wroclaw, will be held in Poland due to Ukraine’s unavailability amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.
Georgia dashed Luxembourg’s dreams with a 2-0 victory, while Greece secured a convincing 5-0 win over Kazakhstan. However, Luxembourg’s goal was overturned by VAR, resulting in a red card for Maxime Chanot.
Greece cruised to victory with goals from four different players in the first 40 minutes, sealing their win with a late own goal. The losers of these matches will face each other in friendlies on Tuesday.
