Cristiano Ronaldo: Liverpool and Man Utd fans unite for fan-led minute of applause at Anfield
Following the death of Cristiano Ronaldo’s baby child, Manchester United and Liverpool fans came together at Anfield for a minute of fan-led applause in solidarity with Cristiano Ronaldo and his family.
In the seventh minute of the league encounter, Liverpool fans sang their club’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” which is Ronaldo’s shirt number at United.
The Portugal international was unable to play in the showdown between the two rivals on Tuesday.
Ronaldo and his partner, Georgina Rodriguez, confirmed the death of their baby on Monday, calling it the “worst agony any parent can suffer.” Rodriguez, 28, and Ronaldo, 37, we’re expecting twins. Their baby girl lived, and their birth “gives us the strength to live this time with some hope and happiness,” they stated.
In honour of Ronaldo and his family, both United and Liverpool players wore black armbands.
Ralf Rangnick, United’s interim manager, stated there were more important things in life than football before the match, in which Liverpool won 4-0 to go two points clear at the top of the Premier League standings.
The clapping in honour of Ronaldo’s baby kid was dubbed the “moment of the game” by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
“We feel for Cristiano and his family because there are so many things in life that are far more important than football,” Klopp said.
“That is precisely how football should be right now, with all rivalries set aside. There is just one thing that matters, and that is a display of class. From the minute we learned about it, our thoughts have been with Cristiano and his family.
At the time, James McFadden, a former Everton and Scotland forward who was a co-commentator for 5 Live during the game, praised the homage as a “true touch of class” from Liverpool fans.
He went on to say, “A great, classy gesture to show their appreciation and support for Cristiano Ronaldo at such a difficult time.”
