Juventus 0-3 Villarreal (1-4 On aggregate): Unai Emery’s Side score three late goals To move into quarter-finals

Villarreal advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals with three late goals, while Juventus was eliminated for the third year in a row.

The Spanish team had not had a shot on goal till substitute Gerard Moreno scored a penalty in the 78th minute after Daniele Rugani fouled Francis Coquelin.

Pau Torres added a second with a six-yard finish after Juventus failed to deal with a corner.

After Matthijs De Ligt handled, Arnaud Danjuma made it 3-0 with another penalty.

When the quarter-final draw takes place on Friday at 11:00 GMT, Villarreal will be in the last eight of the competition for the first time since 2008-09 and only the third time in club history.

Juventus, the two-time European champions, were overwhelming favourites to progress after a 1-1 draw in Spain last week, and they dominated the first half at the Allianz Stadium.

However, Dusan Vlahovic of Juventus, who scored in the first leg, struck the crossbar twice and was twice denied by Villarreal goalkeeper Gero Rulli, who also saved a shot from ex-Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata.

For the majority of the second half, Villarreal, led by former Arsenal manager Emery, had to defend deep and in numbers.

Rugani fouled substitute Coquelin in a rare attack, and referee Szymon Marciniak awarded the penalty after viewing it on a pitchside monitor.

Juventus had been ousted at this stage of the competition the previous two years, losing to Lyon in 2020 and Porto in 2021, and had crumbled in the final 10 minutes of both games.

After poor defence from a corner, Villarreal doubled their lead, before Danjuma, a former Bournemouth striker, converted another penalty kick in injury time.

Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus coach, said: “For more than 75 minutes, I believe the players performed admirably.”

Villarreal, who are currently in seventh place in La Liga, qualified for the Champions League by winning the Europa League final last season, defeating Manchester United 11-10 in a spot shootout in which United goalkeeper David de Gea missed the deciding chance.
