Experts advice and remedies regarding belly itch during pregnancy

Pregnancy ushers in a range of distinctive transformations in a woman’s life. Amid the joyful moments it brings, there are often accompanying discomforts and inconveniences for expectant mothers. A prevalent occurrence during this time is abdominal itching. Although some moms resort to scratching their expanding bellies, specialists emphasise caution and recommend effective strategies to alleviate the discomfort.

Dr. Pratima Thamke, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Motherhood Hospital in Kharghar, explains that abdominal itching is typically due to hormonal changes and the stretching of the skin. Content creator Yashasvi Rathi concurs, sharing on Instagram that belly itching is a common symptom during pregnancy, resulting from both skin stretching and hormonal shifts.

While it can be uncomfortable, it’s usually not a major concern. To ease the itching, consider using moisturisers, opting for loose clothing, avoiding hot showers, and using cold compresses. If the itching is severe or accompanied by a rash, consulting a healthcare provider is important.

Several effective tips can provide relief:

  • Maintaining proper hydration preserves skin moisture. Dr. Thamke suggests applying fragrance-free, hypoallergenic moisturisers regularly to prevent dryness. Wearing loose, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics can minimise friction and irritation.
  • Hot showers and baths should be avoided, as they can dehydrate the skin. After bathing, gently pat your skin dry using mild, unscented soap. Over-the-counter corticosteroid creams could help mitigate itching, but it’s wise to consult a doctor before using any medications during pregnancy.
  • Dietary choices should be made with care, as certain foods might exacerbate itching. A well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients supports skin health. Dr. Thamke recommends seeking dietary recommendations from a healthcare provider.

Dr. Thamke underscores that severe or persistent itching, especially when accompanied by a rash or other symptoms, necessitates prompt medical consultation. These could potentially indicate a more serious condition like cholestasis during pregnancy.

Experts emphasise the uniqueness of each pregnancy and stress the importance of open communication with healthcare providers to ensure optimal care for both the mother and the baby.
