Rita Ora tears up while paying tribute to Liam Payne at the MTV Awards
Rita Ora paid an emotional tribute to Liam Payne during her hosting of the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) in Manchester, nearly a month after the tragic death of the One Direction star. Ora, who had collaborated with Payne on their 2018 hit “For You,” became tearful as she remembered him, describing him as “one of the kindest people I knew.” The heartfelt moment stood in contrast to the upbeat tone of the rest of the ceremony.
Dressed in a dark suit, Ora took a moment towards the end of the show to honor Payne. “I just want to take a moment to remember someone who was very dear to us,” she said, pausing to compose herself. “We lost him recently, and he was a big part of the MTV world, my world, and I think a lot of yours at home and everybody in here tonight.”
She continued, “Liam Payne was one of the kindest people I knew. He had the biggest heart and was always the first to offer help in any way he could. He brought joy to every room and left a mark on this world.” The tribute was followed by a video montage of Payne, accompanied by a snippet of the One Direction song *Night Changes*.
In addition to this emotional tribute, Taylor Swift made history at the event by becoming the first artist to win the “Best Artist” award three times in the 30-year history of the EMAs. Swift was not present to accept her four awards, including Best Artist, Best Video, Best Live Act, and US Artist, as she was preparing for the final leg of her *Eras* tour. In a video acceptance speech, she thanked her fans and collaborators, including Post Malone, for their support.
Other winners included Sabrina Carpenter (Best Song for “Espresso”), Raye (Best UK & Ireland Act), Tyla (Best R&B, Best Afrobeats, Best African Artist), and Benson Boone (Best New Artist). Raye also performed two songs during the ceremony.
The show featured numerous performances, including by Shawn Mendes, Teddy Swims, and the Pet Shop Boys, who were honored as Pop Pioneers. US rapper Busta Rhymes received the Global Icon Award, reflecting on his early days spent in Morecambe, England, where he lived as a child.
Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher was the only winner from Manchester, taking home the Best Rock Act award, although he was absent. Rita Ora led the audience in a sing-along of Oasis’ *Wonderwall*, filling in for Gallagher’s absence.
The night was filled with nostalgic references to Manchester, including the use of *Blue Monday* by New Order and the iconic black-and-yellow motif from the Hacienda nightclub. The event was a celebration of both music and memories, with many tributes to the city’s musical legacy.
